Jody, your comment on the water was interesting. We are doing a foodstorage class locally here and we had a gentleman teach a complete class of water. He went for 2 hours and was not near finished. He said that if the water containers are cleaned properly, even reused bottles (if they are soda, juice, etc., not milk or oil bottles) then the water will stay good for many years. Do not let them be exposed to light and keep them in a cool place. He also said the water will have a funny taste to them. The reason is because it went flat. Did not know water could do that, but you just dump it back and forth between two containers and air will get back in the water and the taste will return. He also gave us a good idea to recycle and get cleaning water at the same time. When you empty a detergent bottle (laundry, dishwashing, shampoo etc.) DO NOT RINSE them out. Fill them slowly with water, so they do not bubble up. You instantly have wash water and you do not need to use your drinking water.

Stephanie, great tip on the detergent bottles! About the water storage, I think it's more of a mental thing for us. Knowing it's that old just seems gross. So why not replace it if we can. Keep things fresh :)

I hope ypu don't do a lot on Facebook. I don't use it and din't want to have to use it to be on the 7 day challenge. Please think of people who don't like to be on social networks and just want to use the regular way of the internet. Thanks!

Pamela, You will be able to do the challenge without using Facebook. Everything will be sent out via email AND posted on our blog as well. We are using Facebook as a way to discuss and share because it is much easier to have a community feel and get good dialogue going in that format rather than in blog comments. We want people to be able to post pictures and videos of their successes (and failures) in the challenge and Facebook is the BEST place to do it. You can see all the discussion without even signing up so you shouldn't feel too left out if you choose not to sign up for Facebook. Hope you enjoy the challenge!

Just a tip for storing water...if you are going to place in on concrete, put a paper bag, or cardboard, or even carpeting under the bottles because the concrete over a period of time leaches the plastic bottle and will taint the water.
If you store in glass containers, this will still be an issue, but to a lesser degree.
As far as long term water storage containers go, Emergency Essentials www.beprepared.com sells a great set up using mylar bags with spouts that go inside of cardboard boxes for storing. They are 5 gallon in size and work just great!
Also, instead of using bleach to keep the water safe for long term storage, try using food grade hydrogen peroxide, but NOT the kind sold in the grocery, drug or Wal Mart stores as they all have unhealthy fillers added to them. A good source for H2O2 is through Guardian of Eden, www.dfwx.com/h2o2.htm I buy through them and have always found their product to be pure. And, my water when stored with hydrogen peroxide tastes fresh, even after a lenghty period of time.

Food grade H2O2 can also be purchased through most good health food stores or they can order it for you. Please follow directions carefully as it can be corrosive if used in excessive amounts. For longer term stability, the partially used bottle can be stored in your freezer.

Julie,
I was wondering what container you were using to store your 72 hr. food in? It looks like a perfect fit. Is it a "costco" size animal cracker jug? And do you store all of those items in your black bin for each family member? I'm just looking for ideas on how to store for each member and yours looks perfect.

Yes that is a costco animal cracker container. Good eye ;) She fits 2 full kits, plus some snacks for her young son in one bin. The black bin is her whole disaster kit but like she said in the video, she still needs to add clothes for each family member. Good luck with everything!
