My husband loves his garden & sells what he can. I manage to get some stuff from him. This year I amnaged to get plenty of 2nd class tomatoes, tons of cucumbers, purple hull peas, green beans, corn, bell peppers, hot peppers, & blackberries. Our orchard was a bust. Peaches came on to soon. Plums did nothing as did the apples. Our concord grapes or making more & more grapes each year. I did get a case of 1/2 pint jellie for the first time this year. Hope your garden does better next year. My husband uses a combination of different products in his raised beds. Save you leaves this fall & add them. They do great under a layer of manure for a winter. I have pic of our beds on my web site.

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

Hey, is there a section just for latest news

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

Where did you find the posts to make your vinyl grow boxes?

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

The drip system is definitely the way to go! I love ours--no more moving hoses or sprinklers around. Just turn the garden on and turn it off--SOOOO NICE!! I want to get my strawberry patch hooked up to it this year. We got our parts from dripworksusa.com in case you don't find what you need locally. Good luck!

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

Shelley,

Yes I saw an ad for these vinyl boxes from a vinyl fence company and they were like $200 per box. I showed it to my husband and he figured out how to make them himself (he's a handy guy). We bought vinyl fence parts at Home Depot and he put it all together for just over $100 for both boxes as I recall. My cousin Emily (her site is linked in this post) has made several of her own boxes too and I think she might be planning to do some tutorials about it sometime.

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

I've just got one raised bed made of wood, but I was wondering what yours are made of. Vinyl? They're beautiful.

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

It's warm enough here to have a garden all year round. Today we had turnips, spinach, and swiss chard from our garden. In about a week we'll have sugar snap peas.

We've been living on our food storage for two years now, and I have to say that a garden is really an important part of one's food storage. It's really nice to have fresh food in one's diet. Also, when you don't have money to add to your storage or go to the store, a garden can really keep you going for a while if you plant it well. Don't forget fruit trees!

To see my garden and what I have planted in it click on my name; I linked right to my garden.

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

I love your raised beds too! I wish my garden was a beautiful, but at least it is functional.

I have already planted my peas, cabbage and lettuce, which are doing very well. I am looking forward to our last frost so I can plant all the other veggies that we love! Although the weather has been a record setting 85 degrees here in southeastern New Mexico, we will probably get a few more frosts and even perhaps one more hard freeze before April, but I am very eager to get started.

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

I love your raised beds! They look so easy to plant and care for.

I can't wait for Spring...but we still have lots of snow and VERY cold weather still. So, I guess I'll be dreaming for quite a while longer.

Thanks for sharing your progress, Jodi!
Joyce

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

I love those Jiffy pots too and I did it exactly the way you did, putting the plant - Jiffy and all - into a larger pot (I used a peat one) of soil once they started to take off. This year will be my second with a garden of my own and my second year using the square-foot garden method. I have four raised beds of approx. 4x4.5 feet each. I'll use one batch of mix to top up all four beds this year (instead of the one batch per bed that I used to fill them last year) and can't wait to see what the gardens will produce!

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

Yeah! Spring is coming! SO excited to garden again. Thanks for clueing me in on your cousin's site. I have some square foot gardens so it will be a great resource for me!

Re: It’s GARDEN time!

Right now my light tables are hopping with tray after tray after tray of strong seedlings of everything from onions to tomatoes.

I do square foot gardening too, so I'm going to look up your cousin's site. I'm continuously amazed at how much food I can grow in them.
