I have never made bread and do not know how we are not really bread eaters.I did make biskets I was reading a good book and so is hubby so we did well there. We replaced a screen door on the back porch which i had bought before we started this and used cordless tools.Went for a walk talked to neighbors along the way, got to know some new ones better.all in all a good day

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

Started off okay, but no water for the toilet....yuck! I have a calling that required me to be on the computer today and I was in the middle of a big canning project and just Thanked the Good Lord that my water was not turned off today. It did make me realize that maybe we should have more water stored for use in the bathrooms though. We have plenty stored for drinking and cooking, but all in small containers. We could last a week or more that way. But would have to fall back on our self contained camper for the toilet facilities. We have the powder to use there and a small amount of water each time to keep the vessel clean. As far as doing something with my family today. Not!! By the time canning was done it was time to fix a quick supper and get ready for the Saterday night session of Stake Conference. Just got home and filled out the questioneer and it is 9 PM too late to play games or anything else.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

I have been out of work without an income, thankfully we still have our utilities (no cable/satelite or cell phones though), in the future I will be refilling my storage that I've used and storing more than I had before. I now have a much better idea of what and how much I really need for my family. Thank you Jodi & Julie!

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

Went to a health fair in town. We spent most of the day there cause it was fun and we we able to eat snacks all day long they offered for free. We have been using the water in storage we need to recycle anyway so we get fresh water for the next six months. I did use my cell phone for an important call I had been expecting for a while. I didn't cook bread but i made a cake instead. It has been fun to see where our needs are and that we need to work on fixing.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

My household lives on the net since my husband does internet marketing. We moved in June and are still unpacking things. I am not trying to make excuses but I would really like to do this challenge because it is a real eye opener for all of us, Sorry the rules were not followed.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

For this day, and ALL days of the challenge: no spending money, no going to stores, and no restaurants.
OK

Your water got shut off because you couldn’t pay your bill last month (remember toilets use 1 1/2-3 gallons of your stored water PER FLUSH)
Everybody was gone at least half the day, with access to plumbing "elsewhere". I did take a bucket bath, instead of a shower this afternoon-- water heated in a metal bucket set out in the sun for about 4 hours (right next to our solar oven cooking dinner!); however, the water was from the hose, rather than waste the filtered water in storage. Used bath water to re-fill toilet after flushing. Also had to water the garden-- things were already wilting; I COULD have done it with stored water, but didn't.

You no longer have cable, internet (except for the challenge), or cell phones due to lack of money
Didn't use either TV or cell (rarely do, so this was no big deal). Had "other stuff" I had to do on the computer (work and church related... plus email...).

You ran out of bread, need some, and can’t afford store bought -YES today is the day you have to actually try making bread
Didn't make bread-- too hot to be baking in the kitchen; "someday" soon, if I ever get to spend most of a day at home, I will try baking in the solar oven. Made "wheat berries" instead of bread-- in the rice cooker, using stored water. Today, made dinner in the solar oven (teriyaki chicken). No pan clean-up-- cooked and served and put leftovers away in the same pans. #2 son licked his bowl "clean".... (At least he didn't have his dog do it for him... this time.)

You can’t participate in activities that are paid for
Do a fun activity with your family, or with your friends that costs no money outside of the home
Went to a funeral (not fun, but friends were there).... Sorted out a couple of bags full of donations to the church rummage sale (ditto).... read (by myself).... crocheted (by myself).... Ate dinner with my kids (does this count as an "activity"?).

Over all-- I think we're fairly well set for short term water "shut offs"-- could probably manage a week without much more than being inconvenienced. More than that-- if we restricted use from the beginning, we have about 2 1/2 weeks worth of DRINKING water, plus some bottled juices. If we have access to "non-potable" fresh water, we would be able to make it drinkable-- with the Berkey filter, bleach and/or heating. I don't think the Berkey would last too long if we started with sea water, though, and there isn't really any other water that would be available if the city water is compleatly cut off; it could probable be used for some cleaning, but if there were to be a really long term outage, we would need to go elsewhere for the duration.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

This day had to be another "thinking" day for us since we had previously planned to be out of town for a VB tournament. Since the water required pumps in the wells for delivery we wouldn't have any water either. Have lots of drinking water on hand - a buchet and the creek take care of the toilets - you only flush when there's lumps - sorry, I know that's gross.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

I had plenty of water in the food storage as well as a couple of different types of wheat for bread making, Don't watch much tv anyway. We also store our empty milk jugs filled with water in the garage for "non-clean" water to use in emergencies, like flushing the toilet. That came in handy! I am a SAHM so our only income was cut to1/3 the normal. We went to the park and walked several days a week and other nights we walked around our town and make fellowship visits to other church members, getting to know them and praying for them. We also took advantage of checking out movies at our library and started a clothes swap with other moms. We had a $0 clothes budget but stayed clothed very nice. Babysat for grocery money. I look back at that time and think Wow, we did it, kept our savings, and payed off our vehicles, acquided no new debts. We can all learn from each other, do the positive and don't focus on the negative.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

I wasn't able to do the challenge completely because I can't lift anything yet and wasn't able to use my stored water. But we have been making home made whole wheat bread for over a year, and using our beans. I figured that things are getting a bit tight and we better prepare by using this food that we have stored. So we have a great whole wheat bread receipe that calls for honey instead of sugar and we make it almost every week. I have grown children that said they would never eat it but always seem to know when we have just taken it out of the oven because they seem drop by.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

So far the emergencies have been awfully easy. We knew exactly what to do! We don't have cable, so having tv isn't a big loss at our house. We do have however, battery operated radio's, so we were able to catch the news. As for baking bread, when in doubt, use your dutch oven. I'm so happy we had this, we've been able to make so many meals in the privacy of our own backyard. Who needs a fancy restaurant, besides, the kids enjoy cooking as well. I think this has been said before, but to better plan (which we now have) is to have a small savings in your own home so that you aren't left without any money...that is an awful feeling. The other item in which we need to better prepare for is gasoline. Not too sure how to store it, but that is something we will be adding real quickly!

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

You caught me on the day I had to teach a canning class, and then come home and can some things that wouldn't keep until Mon. They had free music and activities to watch. With food brought from home to have a picnic and porta potties for us to use the day went better than expected. Having sanitary cleaner with us was a big help. It was a nice day for the family. We spent the morning watching our son race in a cross country race for school and the rest was together as a family. Days like this help to bring a family together. I like to have a challenge like this. We did not do the power part because we were not home. The las time we had a major power outage is was over Christmas. We opened our presents by flashlight. I took pictures in hopes something would show up. The kids spent the whole day doing things together. We went to a friends house for dinner since she had it cooked before the power went out. It was our best Christmas ever. This challenge today brought back those memories. It is nice to just spend time together without the distractions of TV or video games. Thanks for this challenge.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

Your camping adventure brought back memories . . . in our early years of marriage, my husband (an electrician) got laid off. There was not any work to be had at the union hall, so we made an adventure out of an otherwise hard situation. We packed up the kids and went on an extended camping trip (for several weeks). What great memories we made! Twenty years later, our kids talk fondly of our camping adventure and have told us that this was one of the best memories that they have had of their childhood. There is always sunshine in the rain!

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

Glad we had bread all ready made in the freezer. I think we are well suited for this situation. I think the biggest thing you could do to prepare for this emergency is to sock away not only food, but money too. Experts will tell you to reserve 6 months of income if at all possible. We have done this by saving money on household expenses whenever possible and by socking away a little here and a little there.

Re: The 7 Day Challenge: Day 4 (SATURDAY)

This was a good one and thankfully not much of a challenge.
